Recycling Chaff and Coffee Grounds
Diverting chaff and used coffee grounds destined for landfill, to gardens, parks and green community spaces
GoodGround is a London-based company that collects chaff and used coffee grounds from local businesses and delivers them to green community spaces at no cost. By repurposing these grounds as a natural fertiliser, we help improve soil quality while contributing to reducing greenhouse gases. Our mission is to promote sustainability, support local communities, and close the loop on waste, creating a positive environmental impact across the city.
What we do
Diverting from landfill
In the UK, the hospitality industry produces millions of tonnes of used coffee grounds each year. Often, these grounds are sent to landfill, where they break down releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
Although coffee grounds are organic, they don’t biodegrade in the same way as they would in a compost heap. When sent to landfill, they take up valuable space and produce methane, which adds to the environmental challenges we face in waste management.
However, coffee grounds can be repurposed in a much more sustainable way. Instead of going to landfill, they can be used in a variety of environmentally friendly applications, such as creating natural fertilisers for gardens and allotments.
At GOODGROUND, we specialise in collecting used coffee grounds from coffee shops and restaurants across London. We then deliver the grounds free of charge to allotments, community gardens, and other green spaces, where they are used to improve soil health and support sustainable gardening practices. By partnering with GoodGround, businesses can help divert coffee waste from landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting local communities.
Rising costs
The cost of sending waste to landfill in the UK has been steadily increasing due to stricter regulations and rising landfill taxes. For businesses, this means higher disposal costs for general waste. As these costs continue to rise, it makes sense for companies to find ways to divert as much waste as possible from landfill. By separating used coffee grounds businesses can reduce their landfill fees, contribute to sustainability efforts, and support local communities. Diverting your coffee grounds helps the environment and makes good financial sense in today’s economy. Businesses pay for waste collection regardless of where it goes, so redirecting funds and resources to the local community isn’t a difficult choice.
Can used coffee go in food waste?
While this method helps reduce landfill waste, it’s not the most sustainable option for coffee grounds.
When coffee grounds are sent to anaerobic digestion, they are broken down in controlled conditions to produce biogas. However, this process doesn’t allow the grounds to fully return to the soil, missing out on their full potential as a natural fertiliser. Coffee grounds are rich in nutrients that can significantly improve soil health when composted or directly added back to gardens and allotments.
Instead of relying on anaerobic digestion or sending them to landfill, used coffee grounds can be repurposed in a much more sustainable way. By returning them to the soil, they help nourish plants and support the community.
